Hey I would love a critique of my new portfolio site and blog. You can find it at http://kylefiedler.com/.

Any thoughts on the design and code would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Kyle

I love the embedded fonts, and the layout is very clean, crisp – yet interesting.

For someone who doesn't like to write; you're not bad at all. I enjoyed the "My First Art Set" article, which was also very well laid-out. The use of magazine-esque columns is a very nice touch.

On the Leatherbound Books article, the book titles are hard to read. That may've been your point because the rollovers are in white; but on lower-contrast monitors they might not show up at all. Just a thought, you might want to use a different color for them.

Smashing Magazine would like your footer (I do too), it syncs up nicely to the tips they posted in a recent article.

oroboros, thanks for the critique! The "magazine-esque columns" is CSS3 and only works in certain browsers and thanks for the comments of the writing.

I wanted to change the book titles before, I guess they just fell off my radar. I lightened the background and now they are a little bit easier to read.

    Thanks again, Kyle

I think the contrast of the pages makes the site quite hard to read in places. On the main page the light titles (e.g "Google Reader") could do with a bit more contrast. On the books article, to me it looks like there are a load of dark boxes with an author's name at the bottom. I can only clearly read the text if I do a mouseover to activate the hover effect that lightens the text.

It's a nice site though and I like the variety from page to page.

Just seen Oroboros commented on the same thing as me. If you've changed the colours, I still can't read them well. Try running the colours through a tool like: http://snook.ca/technical/colour_contrast/colour.html

    Anytime!

Yeah, I figured it was CSS3 – it looks really nice. I'll have to check it out in an oldschool browser to see the non-column layout. :P

@Leesy, I increased the contrast on the books article now the background of each book is lighter instead of dark so the titles should have more contrast.

As for the homepage titles, if I increase the the contrast on them they take too much visual emphasis on the page, the hierarchy of the page is then somewhat lost. So I increased the transparency a little bit but its probably unnoticeable. I don't get much traffic and the traffic I do get is mostly designers and developers with high res monitors.

    @oroboros

If you look at in any browser besides a webkit browser and firefox you will have a very long line length and thats about it. I wanted to try something new and Im willing to make the sacrifice since I wont be the one reading it in IE :)

Let me know if there is anything else that I can improve.

Thank you both for all your help
